Property Tax Rebate Program for Vacant Units
Feedback Form

Local municipalities currently provide tax relief to building owners with vacancies in commercial and industrial buildings. A property owner can apply for an annual property tax rebate of 35 per cent for vacant industrial space and 30 per cent for vacant commercial space. The cost of providing vacancy rebates directly increases the amount of taxation that is required to meet municipal budget needs.  Residential property taxes fund approximately 80% of this subsidy. A property owner can apply for a rebate once his/her property has been vacant for 90 days and can collect the rebate for as long as it remains vacant.

Municipalities in Northumberland County are reviewing the implications of eliminating the Vacant Unit Property Tax Rebate program as part of efforts to better encourage use of vacant properties for the benefit of the community. We welcome your feedback to help inform a decision on this issue.
